OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN
GRAND JURY'S RECOMMENDATION. . The grand jury yesterday submitted to His Honour tho Chief Justice the following recommendation:— "Wo, tho grand jury of August, 1916, sessions, Wellington Supreme Court, view with concern the: number of sexual offences against children of tender years, and are of opinion that some amendment of tho Criminal Code is dosirablo to meot such cases. Wo are therefore of opinion that in addition to' imprisonment, in extreme cases the penalty should he of such a surgical nature as would prevent a repetition of such an offence." His Honour stated that the amendment suggested had been mado in tho United States, and, ho believed, with good effect. He would, however, transmit the grand jury's recommendation to the proper authorities.
