THE NATIONAL REGISTER

NAMES UNREGISTERED

The following statement was made in the House yesterday by the Hon. G. W. Russell concerning tho statement made in the House that in Malvern County, Canterbury, 101 names out of 311 were noi registered':—"lt is possible that the names may have not been on the Malvern County Roll, owing to changes of address and transfers since registration. Already notice of over 60 transfers to Malvern, have been received from other committees since registration. It lias also to be remembered that a very considerable number of new- arrivals havei come into the Dominion since the rolls wcro compiled.' The' experience of-tho officoin regard to lists submitted'by recruiting committees of names alleged not to be on the roll is that in over 80 per cept. of the cases tho names were registered, and in the other 20 por cent., on further inquiry, it was found that in 6ome cases the names were misspelt, and that the persons referred to were actually registered. lam very confident that at the time of tho conir pilation of the National.'Register not more than 3000 persons for the whole of the Dominion wore unregistered, and considering that over 303,000 had registered, I.think this should be regarded ns satisfactory.""
