GERMAN SUBMARINE SUNK
BRITISH. STEAMER TURNS ON THE ; PIRATE. Australian-Hew Zealand Oabla Association. Baltimore, August 4. Captain, David. Thompson, of the steamship Stratlmess, reports the sinking of a German submarine in the Mediterranean by gunfire. British gunners .on board tho steamer fired in defence, after ,the submarine had. launched a torpedo. A RUNNING FIGHT.(Rcc. August 5, 4.20 p.m.) Baltimore, August i. Captain Thomson, of the British steamer Strath ness, encountered the submarino in the Hediterannean on July 15. A torpedo struck the Strathness aslant, and did little damage. Thomson then fired a six-pounder. Tho returned the fire, and a running battle ensued,' which lasted an hour. Finally a shot struck the submarine near the conning tower. There was a loud explosion, and the submarine then sank, with the gun still on the deck and her hatch wide open. r
