' f 7". ■ • ■ The news from the Western front to-day .tells of a great charge by the inzacs and a corps of tho New Army on j tie Pozieres-Longueval sector. Tlie attack was brilliantly successful, the Germans' second lino dofensive works being first of all pulverised, by the artillery bombardmont • and then effectively cleared by the colonial infantry, fighting shoulder- ' • to-shoulder with British volunteers.-. The ; French front on tho Soramo is fairly quief, but our Allies havo bee n busy elsewhore, for a great conflict lias been raging, and still rage 6, at Verdun. The French offensive which was initiated last week developed Into a strong attack in the : Thiaumont-Fleury region, and theresultso far is the .recapture of both tho , Thiaumoat work and the greater part of the village of Fleury The Turkish forca which, was reported some days ago to bo making a furtivejadyaace from , El Arish in tho direction of the Suez Canal front initiated an attack 'at midnight last Thursday, and the fighting is still proceeding. The enemy, has not made the slightest impression on our defences, and has , already lost about 1000 men in prisoners. , There are signs .of a recrudescence of activity on the Allies'front at Salonika.
