SHORTAGE OF COAL
The heavy weather experienced during | last week was felt by housekeepers |jj through their inability to obtain sup- B plies of coal. The cause of tho shortage | was the tlelay in shipment at the West | Coast coal ports owing to the heavy" | weather, and the fact that those steamers | which were, able to load up l'att to seek ,u shelter on the trip np to Wellington. rt'hikt a number of private merchants | ran Tight out of stocks .at tho week-end, | the State Coal Depot was still able B to supply iu small quantities, though i the demand on the mine is very heavy a just now, and labour of a suitable character is not readily obtainable. On that account there is a notice in the State Coal Depot's office stating that owing: to the extraordinarily heavy demand on tho delivery plant, during the winter months anil tho difficulty iu getting suitable labour (or outside assistance), customers should place their orders, at least ten days in advance of - reyuirements.
