Monish, in an "interview, was optimistic as to the chances of those marooned on Elephant Island, especially •as tliey-are under the able-leadership of M'iUl. ... . . ■ "Tlio worst feature," he said, "is that Hie. marooned men may'think our small boat has foundered. It was one .chance in-a-hundred that the. boat would get through.' ' When' we first landed at Ele T pliant-- Island, Wild- -prospected and found a camp in the north-west, and christened it' 'Wild's Beach.' It was In every • sense. The .wind- blew everlastingly. We had to crawl on hands .and knees to make-headway. ..In tha U'ecMel Sea it was absolute .calm, and w'e called it "Windless Sea," but at Ele. pliant Island- it was. always blowing gales. The journey was worse than our expectations. When.things seemed hopeless, Shackleton rose, as usual, to tha occasion. 'Wo are going to get there iill right,' and we did. 'We■ had the greatest difficulty in making South Georgia with enormous seas on a dead leeehore. I? Shackleton hadn't «et a reefed sail we wouldn't have been alivo now. Wo had to bail continuously. The wind shifted at a critical moment in. our favour. . Our water was exhausted, as we reached the wrong side of South Georgia.
