HUTT ROAD MAINTENANCE

CONCRETE TRACK FAVOURED,

At a meeting- of the Hutfc Koad Board, held on Wednesday afternoon, tho city engineers estimate for tho repair and maintenance work in connection with the Hutt Road were onco more submitted to the board. .Tho total amount to do the work adequately is, in. tho engineer's estimation, ,£SIOO for tho current-year, the allocations to meet that amount' Jailing heavily on the smaller local bodies. I heir representatives freely voiced their opinion that tho amount was excessive. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) moved that the estimate in the engineer's report bo approved. This was seconded by Mr. C. C. Crump (Onslow) pro forma. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Petone) thought the amount excessive, and said that the work could be done much cheaper by tho local bodies. Ho moved, as an amendment, that the engineer's estimates bo cut down by half.

Mr. E. T. Mooro (Jolinsonville) considered that, though tho work was to be done in a high-class way, in two years or so it would be necessary to do it all again, whereas the same expense would provide 21ft. of solid concrete, which would be practically overlasting. Ho hoped that only temporary repairs would bo done, and that Mr. Morton's previous plan regarding concrete would soon bo carried out.

Mr. Crump said that, though supporting Mr. Luke's motion pro forma, ho was very much in favour of a concrete road.

Tho motion was lost and the amendment carried.

Mr. Luke then moved further:—''That this board is of the opinion that immediate arrangements be made~by tho City Council to give effcct to Mr. Morton's scheme 'for permanent road work consisting of tho concrete formation, and that the City Council be authorised to make tho necessary arrangements for raising the money required." This was carried unanimously.
