LEST WE FORGET
(To tho Editor.) ' Shy—X was pleased to . see tho letter signed and headed "Lest Wo Forget," in your issuo o£ August 1, and your remark at the end. I well remember the Incidents o£ tlvo Frajico-Prußsian War m 1870-71 (I was in New Zealand \ at the, time), and how keenly I felt tho loss, by France, of Alsace and Lorraine; Now wo frequently hear of complaints' ■ by tho Germans of tlio "inhumanity" of ' tho British in blockading the ports of Germany, but wo should never forget tho inhuman reply of Bismarck when ho was appealed to," to. have pity on the starving women and children shut up Ul Paris: "No! Let them stew in their own juico!" / Now, as editors are supposed to lhiow everything, I wish to ask if you can give "us tho oxact words of Bismarck's - reply; and whether ho spoke in German, or English, or French.* I presumo that ft good history of the Franco-Prus-sian War of 1870-71 would record his reply, but I do not possess such a history. I think that every newspaper in New Zealand should print Bismarck's reply, not only once,, but from timo to time; and the Germans should also bo reminded of it from timo to tim'c. Hoping that you will ba able to comply with my request,—l am, etc.. C. TT. ADAMS. Lowor Ilutly August 1. [The expression used by Bismarck was that the Germans intended to leavo the City of Paris "to soetho in its own milk." which is but another way of say- ' ing "Slot- in its own juico" or "Stew in its own gravy."]
