Mr. J. Cullon, Commissioner of Police, will retire on superannuation in September next. His term was extended for six months some tlireo or four months ago.

A Press Association telegram from New Plymouth records the death of Mr. Albert Cracroft Fookee, a very old colonist, aged 77. Ho was the second Mayor of New Plymouth.

Mr. Robert E. Wood, formerly manager for Messrs. Kompthorne, v Prosser, and Co. in Wellington, and now manager for Messrs. JFetham, Grimwade, and Co., Melbourne, arrived from Sydney on Monday by the Manuka. Kirkwood has been appointed delegate for Tacanaki in place of Mr. 0. A. Wilson. All other members 'of tho board were re-elected.

Mr. Walter F. Frear,' ex-Governor of Hawaii, who is making a holiday trip to Australia, arrived at Sydney last week. He will visit Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, and will take in New Zealand on his return voyage. The death occurred on Tuesday of a well-known identity in the person of Mr. Robert Melville, at his residence, Cook Street, (Auckland, in his 73rd year.

Pte. E. M. . Brookes, reported killed in' action on July 8, was the second son of Sergt. M. Brookes, of Bluff, and for 'some years prior to the outbreak of war was engaged in various capacities in the Nelson district. He was an enthusiastic footballer, and on several _ occasions he represented Kelson Provinco in Rugby football. A brother of Pte. E. M. Brookes, Pte. W. A. Brookes, joined an Imperial regiment at tho outbreak of hostilities, and was killed later in tho Battle of tho Marne, while another brother, Pte. B. Brookes, who left New Zealand with tho Main Expeditionary Force, was twice wounded on Gallipoli, and is now in England convalescing. ...
