PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
: A - Mr. C. G. G. Berry presided at a meeting of the Astrouoiuical Section "of the Philosophical Society last evening. Professor D. Jl. G. Sommerville read a paper entitled "Facts and Fancies of .the Fourth Dimension." The professor explained that the Fourth Dimension was largely an imaginary idea, but it was of considerable value for mathematical research, and was used greatly by mathematicians. He illustrated his interesting paper with some very-, clear slides,, and an ingenious set of models made by himself.' Dr. Adams read a paper written by Mr. C. J. Westland, dealing with a new method of calculating raoe-nrise. Commenting on Mr. Westland's method, Dr. Adams stated that it was a particularly neat one. Mr. C. G. G. Berry and Dr. Adams exhibited some excellent 'photographs of last Sunday's eclipse of the sun.
