BATTLE INCIDENTS ON THE SOMME
THE HORROR OF LIQUID FIRE Australian-New Zealand Cablo Association. New York, August 1. An awful pictu.ro of tho effects of liquid fire is given by a representative of tho "Neiv York Times" in Paris who interviewed a French oflicor who was at the Somrao. While directing tho fire from a tree top, he saw a detachment of German .'Tlamenwerfer/' carrying .their devilish, apparatus, advancing. ."When they were in a hollow I telephoned directions, and our shells fell among them, smashed tho apparatus, and released the liquid fire. "Then I had a. glimpse of what hell must be like. As tho torrent of shells fell, groat sheets of flame rcso up. The ground becamo a swirling cca of iire, and in tho midst of it the Germans wero like living torches, dying horribly. One spun like a top, and struggled superlwmanly, but finally fell in the pool ;of five. Others rolled to dry ground, but the flaming liquid enveloped them. The dreadful stench of burning flesh was indescribable. As I scrambled back to tho lines the awful'and unforgettable screams of the dying' rose above the din of battle."
