Harold Smith, solicitor, who contested the Pahiatua seat iu 1899, has been approached to stand as tho Reform candidate, and has consented, subject to being satisfied that it is the general wish of the electors. Mr; R. B. Ross, an ex-member of tho "House, says that he has definitely do. cided.to come out as an Independent can. didate. A large and representative meeting of electors' of the Pahiatua distinct was held last night at Woodvillo. ' Mr. Harold Smith was unanimously chosen by the meeting as the candidate to represent the Reform interest, in succession to tliOj late Mr. J. H. Escott. Mr. Smith accepted nomination. THE ISSUE OF THE WRIT. In the House of Representatives last night, Air.. Speaker announced that ho had recoivo\l a telegram from the Registrar that the death of Mr. James Henry Escott had been registered that day. •ilr. Massey then moved tho following motion: "That Mr. Speaker bo directed to issue- his warrant to the' Clerk of "Writs to make out a now writ for tho election to the Houso of Representatives of a representative of the district of Pahiatua in tho room of Mr. James Henry Escott, deceased." The motion was agreed to.
