In the final rush for war loan stock the applicants, who were representative of all classes of tho community, beseiged the Commonwealth Bank and its branches. A special staff is dealing with an enormous mail. No estimate of the subscriptions is available, although the officials are satisfied that tho investments in inscribed stock bonds will exceed those on any previous occasion. OLD AGE PENSIONS. • . NEARLY THREE MILLIONS ANNUALLY. Melbourne, August 1. Replying to a deputation asking for increased old age pensions, the Treasurer (Mr. Higgs) stated that tho Commonwealth was paying .£2,800,000. annually in pensions.
