THE TURF
_—->_. — NOTES.AND COMMENTS !Bt Glencoe.l Entries for the Dannevirke Meeting close on Saturday next. The' New Zealand-bred a full-sister to Anna Carlovna, has 're. tired from the Turf and will 3>e mated in Victoria this spring. At the annual meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club, held on Friday last, it was decided to give ,£SOO to tho Patriotic Funds. A youngster that is showing smart form on the Awapuni track is the Finland—Finery filly in J. Farmer's stables. The dam of this youngster was very fast over a short course, but could not stay. The local owners, the Messrs. PLiddiford, have left their three Boniform youngsters in tho Avondale Stakes, to be run early in September, while Menelaus aud Mascot are in" the Avondale Guineas, run on the second day of the meeting. Kilboy riiu6t have done exceptionally well on his trip to Sydney, as files to hand by this week's mail state that ho worked on the Randwick tracks the day after his arrival. The Golfer, by Wait-a-Bit. who is expected to shortly join a Trentham stable, is now trained by D. J. Price at Flemington. The New Zealand owned Tim Doolan was a runner in the • Steeplechase at Moonee Valley last month, but he was Lime after pulling up, and his prospects. of seeing the post in the Australian Steeplechase are not good. At the Moonee Valley meeting, on July 22, It. B. Cairns rode the winner of the High. Weight Handicap. This -was Wilparoo, who started an outsider and won easily. When Corrie won the Hurdles at the recent Eosehill Meeting her victory was well anticipated, and the Now Zealand mare started favourite Ou tho same afternoon Bee was a runner in the Flying Handicap, but she finished out of a place. Silent Way started at a forlorn price in the Eosehill Handioap, in which he finished third, after making nearly all the running. Sonito (Field Battery—Wist) wasamongst the runners in the Novice Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Monanglo Park Meeting, on July 25, and ridden by L. Hewitt, he started without a quotation and ran accordingly. The ex-New Zealand De Gama is back again in G. Delaney's 6tables at Caulfield. . The Vasco . horse was "'formerly trained by Delaney, when owned, by Mr. F. C. Davis. While schooling at Ellerslie on' Saturday, in company with Waimai, the gelding Inspector struck the stone wall, and, falling heavily, broke his shoulder, and was destroyed. Despite all "reassuring" statements, it is certain that' "Danny* Maher is in a very bad way, says an English writer. He has migrated from the Maidenhead area to tho neighbourhood of Newmarket for the summer, and Mrs. Maher has often to spend many anxious days and nights. Maher should vmake a point of wintering abroad—and riding a tougher finish. The high-priced Taldhurst bred mare, Golden Slipper (Multiform—Slipper) is to be mated with Mr. Joseph- Brown's imported horso Moutecello next 6eason. Golden Slipper's daughter, Golden Shoe, by Wallace, will also go to Moutecello. "Vigilant" (London "Sportsman") understands that with his victory in the June Stakes at Newmarket recently Pommern closed his racing career. It 'has been a brilliant one, for, accounting for the Two Thousand Guineas, the Now Derby, and the September Stakes, ho can tako rank with the winners of the "triple crown," despite the fact that tho "New" Derbywas a substitute for the great Epsom event, that the September Stakes took the place, of the Doncaster St. Leger, and that both were, decided at Newmarket. Pommern (Polymelus-Merry Agnes) has won seven races of the total value of j£15,616. He will prove a great acquisition to the Maiden Erleigh Stud, where are located his sire, Polvmelus, and Sunder. For the 1915-16 racing season (states a Mess Association message from Melbourne), the prize money paid amounted ,*> .£200,000. In the metropolitan area there wero 138 meetings, compared with 162 in the previous season. The stakes amounted to JJIS9.6-M, a reduction of •£12,777. The reduction was due to the curtailment by the Government.
