A FAREWELL

TO UNDEK-SECKETAKY OP NATIVE AFFAIRS. . ( , Judge Thomas W. Fisher, Under-Secre-tary for Native Affairs, who is retiring from the Public Service, was farewelled by representatives of the Native Department at a gathering held in Parliamentary Buildings last evening. The Minister in cliargo of Native Affairs presented Judge Fisher, on behalf of his Department, with a gold watch, suitably inscribed, together with a gold sovereign case, suit-case, and rug. The Minister referred -to the Under-Secre-tary's long arid zealous eorvico in the Government, first in the Public Trust Office, and for the last ten years as Under-Secretary for Native Affairs, 1 in which position he had performed his onerous duties in a most able manner. He had earned most thoroughly, concluded the Minister, the thanks of the Government. , • . Judgo Fisher, in returning thanks, said that although he had been looking forward to his retirement for some time, he found the actual severance from his associates _ was harder ; than he anticipated. His twenty-one years of service with the Government recalled many recollections of a most pleasant nature, and if there had been occasional differences, they, had been all brushed aside within twenty-four hours as far as he was concerned. The speaker remarked that, it was his intention to take an extended holiday trip, and the gifts lie had received, besides being particularly handsome, were decidedly appropriate. The branch offices of tho Department were represented by Judge J. B. Jack, of Wanganui.
