Pattinson, M.A., has been appointed to succeed the Rev. I''. S. Wn<l<ly as headmaster of Jung's School, Sydney. Last evening St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, was well filled on the occasion of a farewell to Mr. G. Flux, headmaster of the Wellington South School. Mr. Flur has bfien in his present position for twenty years, and has been teaching >n Now Zealand for thirty-two years. His full connection with teaching tends back fifty years. Ho is now retiring on superannuation. Mr. Fins received presents from the householders of the school district, from the teachers, tho nnpils, the old' boys, and the old girls. Mrs. Ilus was presented with, suitable silverware. Mr. Flux's successor is Mr. X nomas, of Eketahunn, and Mr. Flux bespoke for him the support of the people of Wellington South. Word has been received by Sub-Inspec-of Ohristchurch (formerly ? son, Lieut. Chas. L.MuUany, of the New Zealand Rifle Imgade, has been mounded in France. Lieut. Mnllany was, prior to the war, on tho clerical staff of the Railway Department at Napier. He went with the New Zealand Expedition to Samoa, and afterwards enlisted as a private in the Rifle Brigade. He gained his commission before leaving New Zealand. (Messrs. G. Harold Smith (Reform), J. D. Matthews (Liberal), and R. B. Ross (Independent) aro mentioned as likely candidates for the Pah'iatua seat in Parliament rendered' vacant by tho death of Mr.. J. H. Esoott. Mr. Crust, formerly of Duncdin, but at present manager of tho Union Theatre in Perth, arrived from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday. 'Ho is maiinfj his honeymoon trip coincidental to ft visit to his native -town. Mr. David P. Howolls, an American film agent, was a passenger from Syd-' noy by tho Manuka, yesterday. Dr. Isaacs, of Wellington, who was on route to Salonika on tho Marquette when that vessel was torpedoed in the Mediterranean, is now with tho Now Zealand forces in France. . Colonel Porter, C.8., who has been confined to the house with a severe cold for somo days, is still indisposed. Mrs. .T. Sydney papers announco the death at Honiebush, Sydney, of Mr. Arthur Stirling Barton, a prominent' Now South Wales pastoralist. ■' Mr. F. R„ C. Hopkins, the well-known Now South Wales pastoralist and litterateur, met with a fatal accident near Garcoar on July 20. 'As. the owner of Errowanbank Station, ho was widely known as a breeder of Romney Marsh sheep. Tho deceased had a strong literary turn, and has written books, dramas, and poems in plenty. His dramatic works include "Good for Evil," "All for Gold" (the first Australian play ever licensed by the Lord Chamberlain for performance in EnglaifiT), "Russia as It Is," and "Reaping tho Whirlwind."
Dr. B. A. Neilson has for 6ome time been installed as the Resident Medical Officer in the Hull Royal Infirmary. Dr. Neileon was • formerly employed in the dr\i(r department of P. Hayman and Co., and later was representative for Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co., which position he left in order to study medicine in Edinburgh. After qualifying,- he entered one of the hospitals in England, and from thero transferred to his present position.
