ORPHANS' CLUB

SUCCESSFUL EVENING. There was a large gathering at the Orphans' Club on Saturday evening, when a very fine evening's entertainment was provided. Among those present were His Excellency the Governor, the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), and BrigadierGeneral Sir Alfred Robin. Chief Orphan the Itov. A. E. Hunt welcomed the guests. His Excellency expressed his pleasure at being present, and mentioned that he had to thank the Orphans for coming to his assistance on two occasions when he needed help to entertain the staffs of the hospital ships. His Excellency said that recently he had received letters from General Sir William Birdwood andCapt. Halsey, both of which communications were interesting to New Zealanders. General Birdwood said he was very glad that the Australian and the New Zealand troops had had a chance of soldiering alongside the English and the French troops. Captain Halsoy said that 'his old ship, the New Zealand, had done extremely well in the fight, and was lucky to get out as lightly as she had. His Excellency had heard also that "The Dinkums" (the New Zealand Rifle Brigade) were very fit, and equal to the other brigades which had gone out. Lord Liverpool went on to refer to what he regarded as the need for not bragging too much about what we 'were going to do when the war was over. Such talk only made an enemy who had his back to tho wall fight the longer. As General Botha said: "We are in the war. Finish the war first, and then talk about what we are going to do." The programme provided by the Orphans was an excellent one, and the function was very pleasant and successful.
