FARM ELEPHANTS

The unusual character of an advertisement in the London "Daily Mail" recently set many people wondering, ft was: ELEPHANT. WANTED to PURCHASE. for heavy harness work.—llopwocd, Sandygate, Sheffield.

Inquiries, showed that the advertisement' emanated from Mr. John Hopwood, a largo South Yorkshire farmer, who wishes for an elephant in order that ho may use it as a war-time substitute for horses and traction engines, Mr. Hopwood farms nearly 400 acres at langold, .near Worksop, and has also a very largo dairv farm at Sandygate. Having' seen an elephant and two camels iu the service of a largo Sheffield steel firm, Mr. Hopwood declares an elephant should prove an ideal animal for farm work, and if the experiments with the one he now advertises for prove successful ho will bo able to provide enough, work for another.
