SHIELDS FOR STORMING PARTIES
SIR A. C'ONAN DOYLE'S SUGGESTION. Australian-Xcw Zealand Cable Association. (Rec. July 2S, 8.50 p.m.) London, July 28. ■ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle strongly ad : vocates body "armour to stop/ machinegun bullets during the rush across NoMan's Land. He says: "A shield of steel, 7-lßths of an inch thick, will stop a point-blank bullet. It would bo 2ft. broad, 3ft. deep, and weigh 301b., but it' would only need to be carried a few hundred yards. If the first-line storming parties carried shields,, helmets, and ' a bag of bombs, they could clear the enemy's machine-guns. Some of the attackers would be bit on the arms and legs, and the enemy's, high explosives would claim victims, but. many casualties would be saved. Sheets of steel, cut to' size, and furnished. with a double thong-to nn-arni grip;- would suffice, and could be turned to any direction to form a screen for snipers."
