THE LUCKENBACH STEAMERS
Sir,—Fearing, apparently, that the German name ot' this line of steamers might in these Australasian States prove detrimental to the success of the venture, the officials connected with the company have been at some pains to publish statements , that the company has been established in America for 25 years, that all its capital is American, and that the steamer at present in port was built in Jjiigiand, These statements may be true, but it is its welt to remember that the present war has shown that there is a lar;;o body of Americans who were decidedly hostile to Britain, and their iufluenco was. so great that President "Wilson has had to suffer from Germany greater indignities than ally ruler of a large State has had to put up with since Napoleon ordered Europe's inonarchs to do as lie wished, i (and I believe there will be a large number of persons with me) would like to have my doubts on these points satisfactorily cleared away, and it is the business of the Government to look into the matter. It is to be feared that even now people in these region? do not fully grasp the significance of the awful contest still proceeding in Europe. Whilst we arc exhausting ourselves and piling u)) thousands of millions of ponnds of debt, are indifferent neutral nations going to be allowed to take advantage of our misfortunes and steal away our trade? In many ways throughout the world the attempt is being made, and if the British' are not fools and blind to their ultimata interests they will now prepare to meet this trade attack.—t am, etc., CYMRIC.
