COLLEGE GOVERNORS
The monthly meeting of the Governors of the Wellington College'was held yes-' terday : morning. ' The - Hon. J. G. 'W. Aitken, M.L.C., presided, 'and there were also present : Mr.' J. P. Luke (Mayor "of Wellington), Professor Easterneld, and Messrs. W. Allan, W. H. Field, W. ¥. Ward, A. Warburton, and W. H. P; Barber.
The financial statement, which was adonted, showed that the balance at tank was .£3099 12s. Id. Payments required were: Wellington College £574 15s. 10d., and Girls' College ,£492 14s. 3d. Fees outstanding were 'Wellington College second term .£BO6 19s. lid., and arrears i£3o 16s. Girls' College second term <£1452 Is. 11(1., and arrears v£so' 4s. Bd., and the rents outstanding were .£406 4s. 4d. The net credit balance shown was .£4778 Bs. 10(1.
Three persons accepted positions on the college staff, namely, Messrs. A. W. Diprose, E. J. D. Hercus and T. D. Fergusson. - Two reports wore received in connection with tho college observatory-. .The report on the work of the- observatory' stated that the establishment of the building was first suggested on August 11, 1911. Past and present members of the college, ami "also, friend v.were invited to subscribe, and by December 8, 1911, .£l5O was handed to. the hoard. By December 8—1912; a further sum of ,£133 was subscribed, and the building was started in. July, 1912, and finished in February, 1913. . The equatorial : telescope was set up on February 24, 1913. Since that data the,observatory-has been open 265 times for observations' and .2325 visitors fre recorded; 769 of these were from outside the college. Much interest has been shown, and a little research work has b»cn carried out. but owing the war the necessary essentials for doing research worl- were'not nrocurnble, and the money collected for the instruments has been spent in repairs to the observatory. A decided improvement to the building was the,laving on of water, and it is hoped that electric light will soon follow.
