After a, fairly smart passago tho Wimincra arrived in port from t Melbourne shortly after 6 o 'clock yeßtcrday morning. The vessel left Melbourne at 5 p.m. on Saturday last, and until approaching tho New- Zealand coast moderate and fine Heather wis experienced. Tho journey occupied tho ship 107 hours from Heads to Beads, an average of 13.7 miles per hour. The Witnmern leaves for Melbourne, via the south, on Saturday. DEVON FROM LIVERPOOL. On her second trip tho new F. and S. liner Devon is now en route from LiverPool to Australian and New Zealand ports. She is due at Melbourne licit Monday, and should bo at Auckland about tho second week in August. .Wellington should be made about August 21. • PORT ELLIOTT AT AUCKLAND. Tho C. and D. liner Port Elliott, ex Indrabaroh, arrived at Auckland on Wednesday night from London, via the usual ports. BARQUE MIEPIELD ARRIVES FROM MARSEILLES. i An arrival in the stream last evening of more than ordiuary interest was tho Norwegian barque Miefield from Marseilles. Tho barque, laden with tiles, left the French port on March 1, and was reported as having passed Oapo Sportel on April 2. Captain Fredricksen, who is in command of the vessel, reported all well on arrival. The Miclicld is a barque of 1275 tons register. " MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. Moore, second olhcer of the Wimlncra, lias- left that Tessel on holiday leave, and Mr. J. W. Wilson, late of the Wostralia, is taking his place temporarily. Mr. W. G. Barrett, late purser of tho Makura, arrived in Wellington by the. Mararoa from Lyttelton yesterday, and left for Sydney, by the Eivcrina. Advice has been received from Loudon that Captain Baylcy, master of the -wellknown F. and S. liner Sussex, has been presented with a. purse containing £2CO from the owners for successfully evading a submarine which attempted to sink tho Sussex. Captain. Baylcy has never visited Wellington as master, but has been here on several occasions, the last being about six years ago, when he was chief officer of the ' Surrey. Mr. C. Oroucher, chief officer of the flimitangi, has signed off that vessel. Mr. Mac Donald, chief officer of the Tutanckai, was taken suddenly ill just prior to .tho departure of the Tutauekai for Cook Strait, and was removed to the Hospital. 'Captain Burgess, of the Marine Surveyors' Department, Wellington, undertook at short notice to act in the capacity of chief officer. '

The Blackball collier Ngahere left, Greymouth for Wellington early yesterday morning. She is due to-day, and. is expected to leave for Greymouth on Saturday evening. The Shaw-Savill liner Tainui left Dunedin for Lyttelton yesterday. She is due back in Wellington on Sunday. The Wcstralia left Sydney for Wellington, via'northern ports, on Wednesday ehortly after midday. She has 1450 tons of cargo on board, and is carrying 41 passengers. Wellington should be reached on August. 4. The Secretary for Marine has been ad-; vised that the steamer Opouri damaged her propeller last 'Friday morning whilst, sheltering in Whareata Cove. D'Urville Island, during a heavy gale. .The anchor was dropped in ten fathoms of water.. When hauling in the anchor the Opouri struck on a steep shingly beach, and snapped a blade off her propeller. A preliminary inquiry is to be held at Lyttelton. The Nikau.'in order to permit intending passengers to view, the parade of troop's on Saturday, will lot leave for Nelson until 5 p.m. The Himitangi arrived in port from the Chatham Islands yesterday morning with n big load of fish. Fairly good weather was experienced on the voyage. , The vessel is expected to leave for Napier'today. ' *
