BED ARMLET IN COURT. A question was asked in the House yesterday by Mr. G. R. Sykes regarding tho recent prosecution at Asnburton of a. young man, who was charged with failing to attend the annual training camp. Mr. Sykes said that, the defendant was a young man who wore the red band denoting sorvico at the froni, and who was wounded .at Gallipoli. The young man before the war had been a resident of Masterton. He had been an enthusiastic volunteer, but when the Defence Act was passed ho refused to attend drill, because, as he said, ho. objected to being driven. Ho was in Cautorbury wlien tho war broke out, and he was ono of tho first to volunteer for active service. Surely, said Mr. Sykes, even if the man had broken the law in the past, ho had expiated his offence, especially as he had returned • from Gallipoli as a hopeless cripple.
Mr. Allen: A man who has been honourably discharged after service at. the front is excused from attending drill. Mr. Sykes: They are still harassing this young man. / Mr. Allen: lt_ must bo a, mistake. I will look into tho matter
