The condition of Mr. J. H. Escotr, M.P., who 16 lying dangerously ill in tho Bowen Street Privato Hospital, is causing his friends grave anxiety.

The Hon. Walter P. Frear, a former Governor of the Hawaiian Islands, and president of the Hands Around the Pacific League, arrived in Auckland by tho Niagara oil Monday morning. He is acoompanied by his wife and daughter, and is proceeding to Sydney with the intention .of touring Australia.

H. tismar, and a letter of commendation to Mr. Cliff Turner, for bravery in saving the life of Miss E. Hanson, who fell over tho King's' Wharf \on November 13, 1915, when seeing troops away. Thero was also present at tho funotion Mr. Lansdown, a waterside, worker, who has saved twenty-ono lives.

Information was received yesterday that Gunner Frederick Francis Marshall, eldest son of Mr. Frank Marshall, of the "Evenlng,;Post" literary staff; was killed in action'on July 9. Gunner was was 21 years of age, left New Zea-' land with the Bth Eeinforcoments, and previous to enlisting was a member of tho local office staff of tho Union Steam Ship Company. He was a prominent member of the Wellington Catholic Club and tho Marist Old Boys' Association; and a member of the Wellington Tennis Club.

Chaplain-Major J. A: Jacob has arrived at Trcnxham Camp for duty.

Tho death occurred in Now Plymouth on Tuesday of Mr. Walter Morey, senr. The lato Mr. Morey settled in Now Plymouth in 1868, and was a member of the Borough Council.

Mr. Walter M. Miller, for many yearn secretary- of the old North Canterbury Hospital Board, died in Christchurch on Monday, aged 82.

Sergeant A. Keith Baker, who left New Zealand as ft corporal with the Canterbury Battalion of the Main Body, and took part in the landing and evaouation of Qallipoli, was killed in action on July 9, in France. Sergeant Baker was amongßt the February nominees for an Imperial commission. Ho was a, graduate of Canterbury College, obtaining his LL.B. degree when ho was 21 vears of age, and just before enlisting he was admitted as n barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. He was a member of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union.

Mr: J. P. Lane, a member of tho staff of the District Lands and Surrey Office, who is in the artillery section of the Sixteenth Reinforcement, was / yesterday presented by his follow-officers with a silver wri6tlet watoh- and other artioles which will be useful to him on active sen-ice. Mr. G. H. M. M'Clure. Commissioner of Crown Lands, made the presentation.

Pre. Henry Barry, of the Eighteenth' Reinforcements, died at the Military Hospital, Upper Hutt, on Tuesday, of imcnnvoiiiii. He was the -youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Parry,' of Gollingwood, N»T son, and was 23 years of age.
