The fortnightly meeting of-the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was /held last evening, . Mr. i". Meadoworoft presiding. The inspector .reported that ho had dealt successfully with eleven cases of cruelty, and after showing one horse to Mr, W. G. Riddell, S.M., the Magistrate had issued a summons to the owner.
A coul'plaint liad been', received that very much unnecessary cruelty' was. taking: place in the Manawatu, in the trapping of opossums. The animals, it Was alleged, were caught' and left in the cages for daj-s in some.instances, and they died there from starvation. Tho complaint was referred on to the Minister of Internal Affairs, and lie Teplicd that lie hoped during the session to pass legislation dealing with the matter. Mr. Webb give .notice of motion: "That another inspector be appointed, besides the inspector now engaged, to travel the country/ places for eases of cruelty." The motion is to be discussed at the meeting on August 22.
