THE MASCOT'S SENTIMENTS
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l am Rending you a copy of letter that was sent to me through your' kind report of me leading tho troops to Trenthara, and I wish to thank the military staff for the kindness that they have shown, to me. I was pleased to have the honour of leading such a fine lot of soldiers, and I will never, forget it. It is a time when our brave soldiers are going away from their homes and leaving their dear mothers and sisters behind. I will always do my duty on behalf of our country. The only thing that hurts me is that I cannot go aivay with the 15th Regiment. I know I am with them in their hearts—they have asked me to load them in going away, and I will do my best to cheer them up, as it is their wish. You said in your paper that the soldiers like me. It is quite true, and I will look' for them on the return from the battlefield.—l am, etc.,
F. V. RUTHERFORD. [The letter Mr. Rutherford refers to is from an officer. It says: "It was with a great deal of pleasure indeed that I read of your plucky march across tho Rimutakas in the lead of the 15th Reinforcements at a time when our country is in death grips with a merciless anil relentless foe. It does one's heart good to read of enthusiasm and patriotism such as you have evinced in connection with our bravo boys going to the front. Onco again I congratulate you, and trust you may bo spared many, many years to enjoy the world peace we are fighting for."]
