THE POST-WAR TRADE COMMITTEE

DOMINIONS NOT REPRESENTED Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, July 23. There is considerable surprise in colonial circles that the Dominions have no representation on Mr. Asquith's PostWar Trade Committee. It is understood that tli© Government's attitude is that that committee shall confine itself to consideration of home affairs, and not deal with Dcyninion trade relations, except briefly as a preliminary to a post-wax Imperial Conference, at which ttio Dominions Trill bo represented; but it is pointed out 'that the committee's order of reference' promised consideration of the development of the Empire's resources and inter-Imperial -understandings, upon which Mr. Hughes particularly insisted while in England. ■ It is believed that the omission would be quickly remedied by the Dominions urging the desirability of participating in all Empire committees henceforth. [Mr. Atiquith (the Prime Minister) has appointed a committee to consider Britain's after-war commercial and industrial policy, with'special reference to the Paris Economic Conference's recommendations. The committee will inquire: "(a) What industries are essential to the future safety of the nation, and what steps are necessary to establish them; (b) what steps are necessary to recover tho boino and foreign, trade which has been lost during tho war, and to secure new markets;'(c) to what extent and by what means the Empire's resources can bo developed; (d) to what extent and by what means tho Empire's 6ou.rccs of supply tan be prevented from falling under foreign control." The committee includes Lord Ihlfour of Burleigh (chairman), Mr. Arthur J. Balfour (First Lord of tho Admiralty), Mr. M. Gosling, Mr. A. M. S. Hcwins, M.P. (Secretary of the Tariff Commission). Sir Alfred Mond, M.P., Sir F. E. Smith, M.l\, and Mr. U. .T. AVanllc, M.P., together with Lord Faringdon's committee.]
