. — — 9 • AN EXCELLENT RECORD. As .110 announcement; has yet been made of the number of' past and present students of tho four affiliated colleges iii, the University of Now Zealand who have enlisted for active service or who are already at the front, tho following'figures compiled by Mr. B. T. Norris, Registrar of. the University of New Zealand, are of interest:— ; Tne details are not complete in every respect, as men have enlisted or gone into camp since the college lists were compiled. The numbe): of those holding commissioned rank, though probably short of the actual figiirc, is worthy of note. Number serving or in camp 1135 Killed in action .. 35 Wounded (number from one college not given) G3 Holding commissions 349 Members of 'teaching staffs 10 . Included in the above are at least eight New Zealand Rhodes scholars, one of whom, S'ergt. Alan' Wallace, M.A., was killed in action, and threo 1851 Exhibition Science scholars. Along with the largo number of university men from all the British universities, these scholars responded to the call of Empire. Mr. Noms adds thai; tho Education Department's report (E7) for 1914 shows that in that-year- the number of men students attending lectures at the four affiliated colleges was 1370, exclusive of 89 men on the books; but not attending classes.' : / [Since the above- was compiled advice has been received that Lieut. Atliol Hudson; ' the last .elected Rhodes scholar, is believed to have been killed in action.]
