COMFORTS FOR MESOPOTAMIA
WEEDS 01' THE WIKEUSSS TROOP. Very successful indeed was the dance which was organised by a committee of the Post and Telegraph .Department with the help of a few outside friends, and held last night fn the Concert Chamber of the Town Hal], for the purpose of raising funds with which to provide comforts for the Wireless Troop in Mesopotamia. Word had reached tho Department that the troop was in great need of these gifts that do much to cheer the hearts of men who are facing the horrors and hardships of war, and with the loast possible waste of time a committee was formed, and energetic steps were taken to remedy this condition of affairs. That the cause was one to arouse sympathy goes without saying, and the comraiitee met with a great amount of assistance in all quarters. As a result, the Wireless Troop is not likely to suffer from such a lack in tho future. The dance was exceedingly well attended, a considerable sprinkling of khaki being seen among those present. The Concert Chamber had been very effectively decorated for the occasion by Miss Murray, who as usual used her artistic skill to the best advantage. Bowls and stands of wattle, foliage; and r.irionjt spring (lowers were arranged on •the stage,. which had been comfortably, furnished for the chaperones, and the front of it had been entirely draped with tho Union .Tack and other flags. Flags, again, draped the pillars, and pink-shaded lights gave a charming colour effect to the room, the white walls of which make such iingood background for decorations. Excellent music for dancing was played by Miss Dodds, and Messrs. Jloore, Walker, and Wilson, who gave their services gratis. The, chaperones present were Lady Ward, who was wearing deep saxe blue charmcuse, veiled with, chiffon, and Mrs. I''. M. B. Fisher, who was in black satin trimmed with lace. Mrs. W. F. Massey was not able to be present, owing to a severe cold, nor was. tho Mayoress (Mrs. ,T. P. Luke). Mrs. Itead wore black silk. The committee was formed by Miss h. Read, who. wore a frock of white crepe de chene, with a crimson belt; Miss Smythson, in white silk, with fichu of lace; Miss Moore, in white crepe do chene, with crimson roses; Miss Pellew and Miss Bell, the two latter, however, being unablo to be present. Also (in the committee were Messrs. Levin, E. Smith, Howie, Harbison, Andrews, Burnell, and Julius. Miss Head and Mr. K. Smith were the joint secretaries, and with tho assistance of Miss Smythson everything was done to secure the enjoyment of thoso present. Also among those who assisted with the dance were Major Sheraon, Captain Short, Lieutenant Samson, Lieutenant Quarterly, and Lieutenant Shepherd. Supper was set on long tables at the further end of the corridor, arranged with wattle, birch foliage, and narcissi. The arrangements werecarried. outbyMrs. Oscar Johnson.
