"PERMITS, PLEASE!"
TRAVELLER'S AWKWARD PREDICAMENT. tt is the duty. of. a police officer told . off for that purpose to examine tho i travelling permits of male passengers as ..they embark on an oversea voyage, and /considerable trouble may ensue upon an ■ evasion 'of the law in this regard. This - was illustrated half an hour before tho • Moeraki sailed for Sydney last evening. A. through passenger • for . Sydney from America (ex Maitai)—a Melbourne young . man, who lias, been studying at a Canadian. University—went to board the Moe--1 raki, when he was-bailed up for his permit. He was unablo to produce it, "and told the constable at tho gangway that his papers were in the keeping' of tlie purser. The constable said ho could not allow him on board, nor could ho go on board with him to interview the purser. Tho young man, who was well and favourably known to other "through passengers, wished to know what lio could do. The constable advised him ' to interview the Minister of Internal Affairs. As jSuch advice, under the cir.cnnistancoo, was ridiculous, the traveller's chance of resinning his voyage last evening looked blue, when another con- . ..stable arrived.and inquired into the matter, with the result that tho unhappy one was allowed to embark, with the warning that if he came ashore again ho would he arrested. • The same young man stated to a fellow-passenger that if ;ho did not arrive in Molbourno next . week ho would have to forfeit a scholarship ho had won.
