Replying lo a deputation from the Trades' Unionist Congress regarding tho regulation of prices of food and fuel, tho increase of old-age pensions, anjl the conscription of riches, Mr. Asquith said that the Congress proposed fixing freight rates, the commandeering or tho home crops, and the fixing of standard prices for food in various areas. . It was true that shipping- companies were making large profits; hut much of the profits was taken from them nn* der the excess profits tax; and the in. terests of the country ijemanded that considerable reserves should he set asido to provido now tonnago ,after tho war. ■ Germany hail - tried fixing maximum prices ;• but ha doubted whether sho was successful. lie was not disposed to attempt it in the United Kingdom. As regards tho conscription of riches, the income tax was so high that ho did not think any .country in the world was exacting • equal contribution from ' the well-to-do. 1
