Holdsworth, late chief postmaster in Auckland, has boon granted tho temporary rank of major whilst employed as the Director of Postal Services, and is attached to Headquarters, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. A Press Association cablegram from London, states that Sir Douglas Mawson. (the Antarctic explorer) has teen gazetted an embarkation staff officer, carrying tho rank of captain. Ho is stationed at Liverpool. The six months' leave of absence, given by tho Wellington Hospital Board to its medical superintendent, Dr. Barclay, who went on service with tho hospital ship Mamma, has expired, find the information the board has at present is to the effect that there is no prospect of Dr. Barclay's immediate return. Quite recently the Marama was still busily engaged. Mr. Norman R. Cleknd has been appointed a member of the Taranaki Land Board. Tho death took placo at her residence, Rintoul Street, last evening of Mrs. John Campbell, wife of Mr. John Campbell, carricr. Duncdin last Sunday of Mr. Edwin Horbert, ono of the best-known and oldest employees in the servico of the Bank of New South. Wales. Tho late Mr. Herbert entered the bank's service in 1378, and at various times has managed the Greymouth.' Hawera, Geraldine, and Marton branches. He was appointed to the latter branch in 1912, and remained there Tip till within a short time of Ms death. Dr. H. W. Cleary. The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. Charles Cecil Maguire, eldest son of the late Mr. Allan Maguire, of Wellington. The deceased wa9 quite well in health up till a few days ago, when he was struck down by pneumonia and died within three days. Tho deceased, who was 33 years of age, was bom in Auckland. lie. was engaged in the building trade with liis father, whilst the latter was in business. He leaves a. wife, but no children. Deceased's only brother, Dr. J. E. C. Maguire, is in charge of the 23rd Ambulance Corps with tho British Army in France. Hie only sister is Mrs. Lon Mlenzie.' Mr.- Haraid A. Bowden, touring manager for the Tivoli Follies, is at present in Wellington. Among those due to go into camp next Tnesday is Mr.' W. Crump, of Palmerston North. Mr. Crump is known throughout New Zealand through his connection with hockey in tho Manawatu. Ho has lieen for many, years a member of the staff of the Palmerston North Post and Telegraph Office. Captain Stuart Moore- lias arrived at Featherston Camp for duty. At the conclusion of tho parade of C Company, Fifth (Wellington) Regiment, last '.evening. Captain J. Koir (Officer Commanding), who is joining tho Expeditionary Forces at Trentham, took occasion to "bid farowell to his command. In a few' brief words he quoted tho Prime Minister's statement "That every man. isi wanted," and urged those present to' see that their comrades in tho "Big Push" now being exerted should be supported to the utmost. Captain Keir's connection with tho Now' Zealand forces dates back some 18 years. Ho has occupied several important posts from time to time, and was staff-officer to Colonel Polo Penton during the period when the Imperial and Indian troops visited Now Zealand. Lieutenant J. A. Duffy, who is second in command, succeeds to the control of the company. He also announced ' that ho had offered his services to the Defence Department. The death of Mr. T. Rosser, at the age of 75. occurred ill Auckland on Monday afternoon. The deceased, who a member of the Order .of Foresters, had been in failing health for somo time. It is just 50 years since Mr. Rosser left England for New Zealand. i Sergeant M'Counell, of the Third Company of the Field Engineers, First Division, Australian Expeditionary Forces, arrived in Auckland from Sydney by the Victoria ou Tuesday. Sergeant M'Connell, whose parents reside at Christchurch, took part in the initial landing on Gallipoli. He lias now been invalided home, suffering from tho effects of several wounds.
