K.XS. MAITAI'S BOUGH TUIP. Over four days late, the Ma.itai showed up in the stream from Sail Francisco at an early hour yesterday morning.. Subsequently she berthed at the Queen's WTiarf, No. 6, to land passengers and caj'go. Departure was taken from tho Californian port on June 21, and arrival made at Papeete on-July 5, otter a tins weather passage. The following day the Maitai left for P,arotonga and experienced. rough weather on the run down. When she was at the Oook Islands very stormy weather was encountered. During the time the vessel was anchored she lost her two anchors. Captain Williams de> oidod to hang on in order to lift the large quantity of fruit ready for shipment, and tho Maitai left for Wellington on July 10.

Stormy "weather was encountered during the whole of the latter part of the .iojirney. The Maitai brought a large consignment of fruit and 1700 tons of cargo for discharge at Wellington. The aproximate total of tho Maitai's fruit cargo, is as follows—76sl cases oranges, 281 cases bananas, 1651 cases tomatoes. 23 saofcs coconuts, 1 case limes, 2 cases mandarines, and 32 cases cucumbers. She cleared New York on June 9. and entered tho Canal on June 17. Owing to'heavy slides in the Gailla.rd Out th© passage, which usually occupies about twelve hours, took the City of Colombo four days. After discharging her case-oil cargo liero the vefesel will procecd to Auckland. WHEAT CHARTER FOR ANTIOPE. The famous old barque Antiope, which was rescued- from the hulli-converters' hands at Wellington by t-lie Otago Roller Mills about 12 mouths ago, has been chartered to load a cargo of wheat at Timaru for South America. The vessel is -at present loading general cargo at Melbourne for Hobart, from which port she proceeds to Port Esperauce to load hardwood for Duncdin. Australian files to hand state that' the vessel has been taken up for South American loading, but it is more than likely that she will load for South Africa. ! ■ , / MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Meria is in- charge of the freight steamer City of Colombo, from New York; and has associated with him the following officers:—Chief, Mr. H. Johnson; secopd, Mr. E. Ilodson; third, Mr. W. F. Given favourable weather, tho British' Imperial Oil Oompasy's steamer Cyrena should reach Wellington from Singapore, via Sydney, sorno time to-morrow. Sho left.Sydney at noon on Saturday. Lytteltou and Duncdin will be tho vessel's next ports of call. Tho Stormbird is expected to be ready to rasuuio running oil Saturday. Tho Himitangi is duo in port to-day. It is probable that she will be dispatched for the Chatham Islands direct to-night No fewer than 400 vessels were iu port at New York when the Oity of Colombo left there for Wellington on June 9. On account of her Iste " arrival,< tho; Moeralu did not sail for Lyttelton till, a.' late hour last night. She is due back hero to-morrow, and will be dispatched for Sydney and Hobart at 5 p.m. tho same day. Duo from Melbourne, via south, on Friday the Paloona will land 700 tons of cargo before she sails for Melbourne direct ,on Saturday. Bad; weather was responsible for delaying the Moeraki on the run from Sydney to Wellington this trip. She left tho New South Wales port af 2 p.m. on Thursday last, and did not arrive here till 9.25 p.m. on Monday. By shipping heavy seas on Saturday last the forecastle was flooded.

According to ail exchange'good progress is being made by ICsssrs. Brown-and Sons, of Kaiparn, in tlio building of the new auxiliary vessel for the Richardson Line. The vessel is exported to ho ready for commission in November,- and will . be fitted -with engines- of 2CO h.p., burning crude oil. She will have a carrying capacity of about ISO tons, and is to be used as a lighter at Wairoa. No -word has bean received of the Edgar P. Luckenbach, which was duo at Auckland on Saturday from New York. When the Oity of Colombo passed through the Panama Oaaal the "Edgar" left the same day for New Zealand ports. After visiting Auckland the "Edgar" will call at Napier and Wellington. Advice has been received that the/ auxiliary scow Echo, -which was purchased here a few months ago by .Messrs. Richttrdsou and Co., of Napier, will be ready for recommissioning on Friday. The vessel has been fitted with a set of twinscrew oil engines of 55 and 50 h.p. respectively. The New Zealand Shipping Company's Orari should reach Wellington to-morrow from Lyttelton. The Star of Australia is expected on Jlondav or Tuesday next from ■ Gisborne and Napier. The same company's Jluritai is due here from I/yttclton to-morrow. At 10 a.m. yesterday the HuddartPaiker steamer Victoria arrived at Auckland from Sydney after a stormy passage. She will leave there to-day—one .day late— and will not arrive here' till Saturday next. The vessel will be dispatched for Buuedin direct the same day. thus omitting the usual call at Lyttelton this trip., The Huddart-Parkcr steamer Wimmera. is due from Melbourne on July 27. She -will remain here till.July 25 when departure will bo taken for tho Victorian port, via south. The Wimmera will leave the Bluff on August 3. Sailing to-day the Union steamer Corinna will take Picton, Lyttelton, and other southern ports cargo.
