It was f<:jiud to lx! a difficult problem, 'l'ho quosi.\'<ii of a Dominion standard scale was found still more difficult, particularly on account of tho high cost of living in Wellington. Auckland adopted ft scalo, but exporicuoeil difliculty in giving effoot to it. .Now, tho Wellington War Relief Association has dccided oil tho following scalo as a temporary basis in ordinary circumstances Tho income over and above rent to bo: JB b. d. Womau and one or two children 115 0 Woman and three children 2 0 0 Woman and four children .- 2 10 Woman and 5 children 2 7 S For every additional child 0 8 G Taking tile case of a -woman Tritli four children, the scalo operates thus: The woman receives— ■fl s. d. Separation allowance ... fl 7 0 per week On account of the children : 0 14 0 per week Husband's allotment of .. (say) 4s.'daily 1 8 0 per week Total military pay 2 fl 0 Deduot Tent (soy) 0 15 0 Amount remaining 1 Id 0 Amount needed to reach tho scale sum 0 10 0 Scale allowanoe . (alx>TO rent) 2 4 0 'Therefore, in such a case the War Relief Association would contribute 10s. jier week towaras the support of the family of the soldier lVjio'is on active s«rvice. It may be pointed out that not every husband leaves his family 4s. daily out of his ss: of pay. Some, the association finds, allot a, very mean pittance, and some nothing. The 15s. mentioned for rent is not taken as the amount paid in an acceptable City street, but as a suburban rental.
