METHODIST CENTRAL MISSION

The quarterly Management, board met ou Saturday when a good-at-tendance ot officials '.was presided over by the 'superintendent, the Kev. G. Kuowles-Smith. The membership returns showed a small increase for tho quarter,, whilst the stewards' accounts evidenced n. -'balance in hand. The latter fact 13 largely due to the efforts of the Ladies' Wuild, whereby some .£33 was added to the income,.for which donation the liidies were warmly thanked. The report of the theatre service showed that the attendance was considerably increased, and arrangements were made for a further twelve months' tenancy of Everybody's theatre.. The yoivng people's.department was reported to be oncouraging, especially in connection with the primary department, iwhich, under the skilled management of Mr.' W. E. Howe, now numbers over 100 juveniles. Great regret.'was expressed that owing to the lack of accommodation tho physical culture classes eo. ably conducted last year by SI iss Stairmand, could not be organised thin season, and in view of tho needs of the young people it was decided to endeavour to securo some additional hall if at all possible. The Silver Eand' has again done splendid'sprvico under Bandmaster H; Baker and the board heard with considerable surprise that notwithstanding its excellent work for the Hospital and patriotic purposes, gratuitously rendered, that the Corporation had refused to add them to the list of subsidised hands, i lie need for a permanent and conlrally-situ-ated home was again stressed, it being i'elt that an institutional mission on tho lines followed in England would prove of great value to the City; bait the board felt, that the financial burden could not l)o "undertaken unless some unforseen and generous assistance is forthcoming locally ,or counexionally. Intinibtion was made Hint Mr. Varcoe had nndorlaken the _r.nllectiiig of the annual appeal'to the -Wellington' citiiwns, and-hopo was expressed that he would be as kindly received as his pretlecessor, Mr. M'Quade, "pow deceased. The superintendent voiced the very cordial relationship existing between the missiim and their .guests at Webb street the Courtenay rlaco CongregaItonal' Church, ami sanction was given J'or a Sunday Sabbath-School Anuiversa»7 for the omited schools. Through tho senior stowani, r. G. Pethorick, intimation was lihide of the board's desire that, the Kev. G. Knowles-Smith should lemain ns superintendeut for a fifth year, and an assurance that, the formal invitation, as laid down by cunnextional rule, would be so extended to. him at tho September board meeting.
