NOTES AND COMMENTS

■ !Bt Glencoe.l Considerable interest was taken in the appearance, of the. National and Winter Cup ; weights, which were made public last evening. . lri the Steeplechase Braeburn, iu the absence of Bl .Gallo, is top weight with 11st. 111b.,. and on his recent form he is not harshly treated, but it ..has to bo remembered that he lias been off the, scene /for a considerable time, and/may hot see the ; post.. El Progi'esso, list. 811).', is nicely handicap•ped, and has teen given every inducement to make tho trip. At Flemington, where there is a, 9st. minimum,-lie was weighted at list. 121b., so, although defeated, ho is well .treated on figures, for it can 1 hardly be thought that our horses are-better than the Victorian 'chasers. Waimai, list. 81b., is well enough in. : He was runner-up to El Gallo in the Northern Steeplechase ..with list. 21b., and in :the Maiden/Steeples lie'carried 12st., and badly : beat New York, lOst. -Gib.' - Tho subsequent form of the latter gives Waimai a great chance. Ngatoa, lOst. 121b., is reported to be an .unlikely' starter, as he is on tho damaged list. Fagot, lOst. 111b., is a good, safe jumper, and stays well. Tarero, lOst. 111b.,' hits been showing no. form lately, but Vascular .is an improving /horse, though; with lOst. 111b., he is handicapped up' to his best. . Wirokino, 10sfci':-lllb., maybe troubled by the last bit of tho "'journey..; He is a smart jumper,' lint.' is not built on weightcarrying ,'lines. ./. Bransfield,. lOst. 81b„ won at Wellington, and/ must be regarded asfohe. of the -probables. ■ New York, lOst. 31b.,. is well enough in, but the big fences at. Eiccartoh may require too much effort from him. Of tho division below' lOst., Idealism, 9st. 111b., BlackSea 9st. 71b.,' and Hcatherlea 9st. 71b„ read, tho best.

In the Winter Clip, Borko's Drift, list. 91b., is in his right place, and is not badly treated. At Dunedin ho just failed to concede 2st. 111b. to Ringforin, and there is now 211bs. between them. The form reads good, as the chestnut gelding won at Trentham in good style. Kooya, ■ list. 31b., ■ and Multifual list, lib., have both got • chances. Plying Start, lOst. 121b., always shows his best form at Biccarton, but his recent form does not suggest that he is improving. Seadown, lOst. lllfy., is well looked after, and tho handicapper seems to have ignored his form here, and placed more reliance on the Biccarton Easter form; where the- Downshire : gelding won with 201bs! above the minimum.

Bisogne,' lOst. 91b., seems to be the eye, of tho handicap. Nothing could havo been, more pleasing than tho way he won on Saturday with lOst. Blb., and the certainly looked as if he could go on .another three furlongs. Hydrus, lOst. 81b.,-does not nppea? likely to Bucceed under welter weights. George lOst. 61b., is not likely to be dangerous on top of tho ground, though his recent form shows that ho is a better horse now than previously. ' Ringform, lOst. 21b., has a chance, ' as has Gold Soult, lOst. Revalenta, 9st. 91b., to have be#n well looked aftor for a maiden purformer, and her second to Seadown in the Autumn. Plate <it Riccarton has got her this impost, while the handicapper evidently look* to her eto he a greatly improved mare next month. Of the liglrt-weights, Sir Agnes (9st. 21b.) and Cherry Blossom (9st. lib.) seem well in. The pair have both been consistent lately, particularly the latter, who has been in a second place at her last six starts.

Mr. John E. lladden's stud at Lexington, Kentucky, contains 235 brood mares in its 2210 acres of land. In 1915 the produce of the stud mares and stallions ivon 325 races worth .£58,965, and duriug the past seven years the stallions at Mr. Alaudett's stud havo sired winners "of .£321,090.

Mr. R. H. Skipwith hag been appointed Btarter to the Avondale Jocitej Club for the coming season. This Beason a single horse has been responsible for placing a luckly owner at the head of tKe winning owners' list for New South Wales. The successtul horse, was-St. Uarwyno (by St. Alwyne— Carwee), who' earned in stakes for Mr. W. Dalley tho handsome 6Uin of JE7237 10s. Last season Mr. Dalley was credited with from St. Carwyne's racing. This profitable animal, who is about to be retired to tho stud, was purchased by his present owner for the modest prico of lllflgns. at tho Randwick yearling sales of 1912.

' A peculiarity about the two wins* in tho Wellington Steeples 'of horses owned by Mr. C. F. Vallance is that the pair, Nedra and 'Bransfield, woxs both sired by Renffwii... Mr. Vallance'ii jumpers are generally schooled on his own station by members of hts family.

Trainers nowadays seem to be realising that there are good stakes to be won by two-year-olds that are got ready early. This season reports from all tho principal training tracks show that tho majority of the yearlings havo already been spurted two and three furlongs. Luke Wilson has been engaged to Tido Gold Soult in' the Winter Cup, J. O'Shea will be on Seadowu, A. Oliver oil Revalenta, R. Hatch on, Glenroy, B. Deeley 'on Multifual, W. Robinson on Ilorko's Drift, W. Price on Sir Agnes, and C. .Carmont on Lady Louisa. Tho judicial Committee of tho Wellington Racing Club sat until a late hour on Saturday evening in connection with tho Kooya case. The matter was not finished, and will be gone on with on Wednesday evening. According to a Press Association message from Melbourne, Merrimax is amongst tho acceptors for tho Australian Hurdles, and Tim Doolan for the Australian Steeplechase.
