DRAUGHTS .

WORKING MEN'S CLUB V. ?! ATER- ■ SJDEKS. . •. ; The Working Men's Club and Watersiders' teams were pitted against each other on Thursday evening, in the 'social hall of the Working Men's Club. In the unavoidable absence -of the president (Mr. Mace) a cordial welcome was extended to the visitors by Mr. W. J. Smith, vice-president. Mr. Smith voiced the general regret that there- have been such a few draughts matches, in Wellington during the past ten years, and es-. pressod the hope that the teams would meet regularly in future, say, ones or twice a. year. (Applause.) He took the occasion to thank Waterside Workers' Union for donating a challenge shield for the purpose of advancing the game of draughts in this <sity, 1 and trusted that many » hard-fought and enjoyable match would result. His team had always been beaten when meeting the Watersiders, but they were not downhearted' and intended to work on with the idea of turning the tables on' their formidable opponents. It only remained for him to say that ho hoped the assembled enthusiasts would enjoy the contest they wore entering on. and that all would look back with much pleasure to their first shield match. (Applause.) The pairing was then announced, and play proceeded rapidly. The play at the ..higher boards was closely followed by a large number of spectators. The . main interest naturally centred in the contest at Board 1, between tho two captains, Messrs. Erickson and W. H. Smith, who •drew their two games. . Mr. J. Eeid's fine form at Board 2 was also admired. Refreshments were provided during. the evening;. During the last hour the Watersiders steadily forged ahead, and* when play ceased shortly before 11 p.m. they', were returned winners with a mar■gin of six games.
