FIFTY-FIRST ANNIVBBSARy. V ' 'J'lie fifty-lirst anniversary of the Sal-. Yntiou Army was celebrated throughout, the world on. Sunday last. The exact date of the commencement of this wellknown organisation was July 5, 18G5, for on that date William Booth, in Army phraseology, "fired the first'.shot." The spot chosen was Mile End Waste, London, .opposite an old hotel. This has long since Ijeen removed, and to-day a garden occupies tho space, with a special commemoration stone marking tho spot where this world-wide movement began. To<lay the Salvation Army flag flies iii CO different countries, and the Gospel is preached in 39 different languages. It has IG.7GS officers at work in some 9073 stations and outposts—ll73 social institutions—a wonderful network of rescue, reformative, and preventive agencies. Gil day schools, and 17 naval and military homes. Eighty periodicals arc published by the Army, with the huge total of 1,201,222 copies per issue. There is no abatement of any of its energy under the direction <)f ' Bramwell Booth, and in every country it is endeavouring to grapple, with the peculiar problems which are arising consequent upon, the great war.
