French Club, A meeting of tho French Club was held' 011 Wednesday evening, when-'an-inter-! vsting and varied programme .was submitted. Mr. G. B. Adainson presided, and the. first item was a, song "Obstinatiou," by Miss Rosa. Van Staveron, accompanied by Mrs. Fordham. This was' followed by an interesting article on iox hunting, read, by Miss Van Staveren"; mid ii -paper by -Miss M'Dia.rmid, entitled "Les Lyriques Francaisos.-" In illustration of the latter, a number of characteristic lyrics wero, read /by -Miss Hind; and a song was~ given by 51 r. Hodson, accompanied by 'Miss 1 Rowley. Tho programme concluded with a reading by Mr. T. Wlietton of two anecdotes entitled respectively "La peiir du Tonnerre" and. "La, Vendetta. Napier last night' of Mrs.- Harrictte Elizabeth Oldham, well known throughout tho Dominion in connection with the work of the Women' 6 Christian Tempor&ncc Union.She took a prominent part, in temperance and social reform, and was for eight years president of tho Napior branch of tho W.C.T.U. She also 6erved on tho School Committeo for five years, was editor and manager of the "White Ribbon," tho official organ bf the W.C.T.U. Mrs. Oldham was widely esteemed. She leaves a husband, a daughter (Miss Harrison) and two sons (Messrs. E. W. and G. F Harrison, New Guinea.) —Piess Association.,

APPEAL FROM MESOPOTAMIA BED CROSS. NEEDS FOR. WIRELESS ' : , TROOP. An appeal for Red Cross comforts for the wireless men ,in Mesopotamia—an appeal which, is all the more urgent when remembering . the news appearing fiiom Mesopotamia in the cablo oolumns within the last day or two—lias been, received from the late Lieut. ,AV. 'B. H. Clarke, Officer Commanding the New Zealand Wireless Troop, whoso death from fever was announced on Thursday. The appeal was forwarded : to Mr. Contbs, written on April 27, and is as follows: —"I am writing to you to ask you (bo appeal on behalf of the troop for 'Re<l Cross Comforts Funds.' ,Wo .are in the unenviable' position of being without any regimental funds, and as this country,is likely 'to 'play up' with-some of the-boys (in fact has been.'doing so already), funds are urgently needed to'enable me to purohaso comforts for thom. The funds would also bo dovoted to the purejiaso of various comforts for the march? and as small sections of the troop will huvo. on occasion, to work on their own, tnoir coinfort and welfare would bo greatly enhanced were these ; funds availablo. Would you see what tho members of the i.Department would do? I can assure you that anything that can bo done will bo (freatly appreciated.". In response to this appeal an energctic committee from tho Post and Tolograph Department is organising a patriotic dance for tho purpose of raising funds for this object. It will, ho held in itlie Concert Chamber of tho Town Hall on Friday, July 21, and Mrs. W. F.. Massey, tho Mayoress. (Mrs.. J. P. Luke), Lady Ward, Airs. F. M. B.
