PROMOTION OF TEACHERS
» ALLEGED DISSATISFACTION. Last week Mr. E. Fletcher (Wellington Central) asked the Minister of Education: What are til© methods employed and on what principle does the Wellington Education Board promote its tcachers? It was alleged, ho said, that a considerable amount of dissatisfaction existed in regard to promotions, and that a good deal of injustice obtained in connection thorewith. In reply, the Hon. .T. A. Hanan (Minister of Education) said The Wellington Education Board is a corporate T>ody having statutory independent authority in the matter of appointment and promotion of teachers subject to tlio Education Act and the regulations thereunder. In reply to inquiries made, the board states that in relation to appointments, transfers, and promotions tho principles which determine tlicir action arc those embodied in the Education Act of 1914, and the methods they adopt are those set forth in that Act and tho regulations thereunder. . In regard to primary and secondary appointments, they havo not intentionally departed from either principle or practice as set forth in that Act and the regulations thereunder. Subsequently Mr. Fletcher gave notict, to ask the Minister of Education if he will inquire into tho statement mado by those teachers who allege they should have been given a higher position in tho Dominion grading list of teachers, with a view to meeting the wishes of those who may be able to justify their complaints.
