DOCTORS AND THE LODGES
Referring yesterday 1° t' le question put in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by Mr. -It. Fletcher concerning friendly societies and the doctors, and tho figures quoted by Mr. Fletcher, the lion, secretary of the British Medical Association, stated:—
"The doctors are at a. loss to .understand what Mr. Fletcher meant by ■''initial" fees in his question in Tespeet to the total of amounts paid to the Indgo doctors. Tho figure quoted, £1,162,105,' renresents the sum, total of monoys paid to the lodge doctors throughout the Dominion during the last twenty-ei?ht years.' • Mr. -C. S. Kelly hafl stated that tho membership of the lodges is upwards of 230,000; Wheu looked at proportionately during this period' the amount is not excessive* especially when we have the' same statement from which Mr. Fletcher obtained his information the fact that'during exactly the same period the lodge members Teceived in sick pay from their lodees JC1.251.5J33, that is. more in suck pay than their doctors received for attending them while they were sick; and. of course", (his would only apply to the sick adult members,' and mostly male, . 'at ' that." Further comment is unnecessary."'
