This story of cross purposes is vouched for by a naval officer:—A lieutenant, seeing a sailor fall overboard, jumped after him. The paymaster, shaving in his cabin bolow, saw the lieutenant pass the port-hole on his way downwards, rushed on deck and jumped after him, thinking he had fallen overboard.
