THE NEW AMENDMENTS , DISCUSSED IN COMMITTEE The Legislative Council met at 2.30 n.tn. the Speaker, Hon. C. J. JOHNSTON, expressed his appreciation of the message of condolence that had been forwarded to him by the Council in connection with the death of his son, Captain 0. It. J:. Johnston, who has been killed in action in France. All the members his family, 110 said, greatly appreciated the remarks made by Sir Francis Hell in regard to the merits, military and otherwise, of his late son. lu tho speech of their leader; lie recognised something wider and deeper than a mere personal reference. It was that the feet ings of every member of the Council went out in sympathy to all who suffered bereavement through this dreadful war. (Hear, hear.) Tho Hon. W. EARNSHAW gave notice to move: "That the Government be re. quested to - take into consideration the wisdom of joining with the Federal Government of Australia in appointing an industrial commission of inquiry, representative of manufacturers and worker*, to visit the United States of America, to report upon the methods of manufacture nnd production and conditions of employment." ' SIR FRANCIS JJELL announced that owing to the indisposition of the Hon. J. Allen, the conference between the managers appointed by the two Houses in regard to til"? disputed clauses in the Military Service Bill had been postponed Until luesday next. The Council adjourned at 2.35 p.m. 1111. til Tuesday next.
