THE FIGHT FOR KOVEL la tho news from the Russian anil Western theatres to-day there is, comparatively speaking, an absence of fresh development so far as new attacks lire concerned, but there is nevertheless no lack of interest in the dispatches. From the pen of Mr. Phil ip Gibbs and otliers, we are give* sidelights of the fighting at Contalmaison and Trones Wood, in tho path of the British offensive, which afford a closer view of tho nature of the fighting than is vouchsafed in the official dispatches, and this nearer inspection reveals something of the fri ghtfulness of war. The French south of the Sommc are experiencing a lull, but there is a lively diversion at Verdun, where the Germans, despite their peril further along the line, have not yet relaxed their offensive, but are pursuing it with the evident intention of luring'their powerful enemies from their grim purpose on the Somme. The German people are said to be entering a state not far remote from panic, their nneasy state of mind being influenced by two circumstances: The German Staff's clumsy efforts to gloss over recent reverses, and the summoning- of youths to the colours. In the Russian theatre the main interest is-on the Stochod River—a barrior that has so far been to the German advantage. The Germans,, forced to retreat, burned their bridges as they retired across the river, compelling the Russians to swim across.
