WELLINGTON RACES

WINTER MEETING STEEPLECHASE WON BY BRANSFIELD SOME GREAT JUMPING The weather was liuo overhead for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter meeting. There was. a large attendance, including the majority of the. soldiers in camp at Trentham. Tho members ff tlic Racing Conference, Trotting- Conference, and Country Clubs' Association were also present, and the crowd.also included prominent ownera from ali parts of tlio Dominion. The racing was high class, and it is safe to say that the iiuishes in tho big jumping eveuts-were the finest ever witnessed oil the course. Better jumping has never been; seen, at Trentham, and the racing went off with a swing. When looking like a winner in the big Steeplechase, Queen's Post collided with New York at the last fence, and lost (winder, while she also interfered with NewYork, and perhaps cost him'tho race. After this Ilia rider seemed to be too confident when ho had disposed of ugoFt, or.lie'might have still beaten Rranslield, whose rider caught him napping. Tho.: machine handled ,Ki5,7GiS for the eight oveuts, as' against J631,1-16 10s. in .1911, when there were only seven events oh. the- card. . Soultikofl' and Arlington were the withdrawals from tho Vittoria. Hurdles. Tho public were divided in their fancies, and iieaYy backing was accorded Austin, Sir Solo, Patronymic, and Banian. At the start. Ormesby wont off with a big lead, anil passing the stand lie was fully ten lengths out from-'Amber and White. Hounding the top Banian and the rest of the field were in a cluster, but the leader ..was. still well clear at the live furlongs. Two furlongs furthor on Banian ran up to tho leader, and took the last fence slightly in front. He then 'ran in an easy winner from Ormesby.-,. Sir Solo was ten lengths -away, and then caino Amber and White, Nicomar, Austin, and Patronymic in that order. A. very big field contested the Stewards'. Handicap, ■" Calais being the only withdrawal." Bisogne was a good favourite, with George, Aurore,"and several others well backed. Mount Victoria, Black Lupin, and Lady Black were prominent across the-bottom stretch. Running on to the course proper Sea Lord and George moved. up, and v the chestnut led to the distance' post,, where Ladogeur shot out. The latter looked: like winning comfortably, but Sea Lord stuck well to his task and beat him home by a head. George was two lengths away, and then came Jean Laddo, Jeaunot and - Lady Black. The favourite finished in the ruck. His poor display was due to the fact that he got caught in the tapes ,at the start. All, the acceptors went ; out for the Hack- and Hunters' Stoeplcohase, and thore was keen support for Hopje and Wirokino. The former lost his rider at the top of the course in the first round, and Kirkby fell also. At the-start Critic led Precious Metal and Oratonu. With a. niilo gone Wirokino" -was ont by himself and was jumping faultlessly. Down the back the last time the leader nad a break of twenty lengths on Darby Paul, with Oratonu and Precious Metal ■ next. The Kiccarton horse hit tlio logs hard and lost his rider.. Wirokino ran home the easiest possible winnor from Darby Paul, who was.out by himself, from the remainder. lierokohu was a head in front of Precious Metal, and then came Tho Chef-and Critic. For tTie Trial Plato the public were divided equally as to the merits of T'oro Toro and Hymenaeus, and the pair finished first and last, with the honours to the top-weight. Bncing on to the course proper,. jßoseland sho*ved tho way •to MaScot and Toro Toro, but inside the distance the last-named asserted himself and won decisively. Puosoland was ridden right, out to beat Mascot. Then 'came Fideloy. Helsingl'ors,' and Huipai. Hyihenaeus is "a' good-looking sort,, out very much on the green side, and ne seemed quite unable to act in the going. ' The big Steeplechase came next, and 'the crowd present thronged, tho rails to obtain a close view of tho contestants. In the birdcage Tarero was most admired,, and he stripped like a Cup horse. Severalof the others also scrippod well, particularly Now York.. The betting, was wide, . the "investing public seemingly ■ regarding the race as most open. From a good start Fagot piloted the field for a-,fur-long, whero he was joined by New York, and the pair rose at the first fence together. The chestnut then took charge, while- Black Sea and Captain Jack whipped the .field. Passing the stand the big Bold was well launched, and the lumping was perfect, eliciting rounds of applaiiso from the crowd. Across the top the same older prevailed, and it was • anybody's race. Now York was still pilot at the stone wall, but ho and Queen b Post both! ran it down, and Ngatoa foil at it. The first fenco of the double brought down Marton, but the others gave splendid exhibitions. At tho mile Merry Lad shot out and led Queen's Post, Fagot,"New.-York, Tatcro, and Bransfield. Tho big brush at the half-mile nearly -brought Merry Lad down, aud Queen's - Post shot to the front. Racing to the ricker lie was challenged by Fagot and New York, with Bransfiald coming fast. Queen's Post was tiring badly, rind tbo hencoop caused him to swerve and lose his rider, while he also slightly interfered ■ with New York. This left Fagot in charge, but his pace was deficient, and Now York gathered him in again, but Bransfield had the pace of tlio pair, and in the run to the post he got up and won by .a neck, with Fagot half a length "away. Then cam'e Merry Lad, Captain I Jack, Vascular, Black Sea, Tarero, and I Nanpata; Ngatoa Mas bleeding a, lot after his fall, and Traill received a ■broken collarbone. The race was a most successful one, aud the finish the finest that has evor been witnessed in i'a jumping event on the Trentham course. ' 'the winner is owned by Mr. C F. Vallance, who won the race with Nedra in 1913. Bransfiold is by ltenown, who did not leave, many jumpers. This is his second success over big country, his'previous win having been achieved at Napier, last monih in a hack steeplechase. Tho whole fifteen acceptors wont to the post for the .Parliamentary Handicap. Multifual, Kooya, and Lady Louisa were the- best backed, while there was good money for Ringform. From a perfect start Maid-o'-Gowrie was tho quickest to find her feet, and she led>a. packed field out of the straight. Down the back Orleans and Inevu wore prominent of the others, but at tho six furlongs Hygia and Lady Louisa had taken the positions behind Maid-o'-Gowrie. Tho last-named had a break of three lengths at tho half-mile. Here Multifual moved up on the outside. Entering, tho last quarter, Multifual and Lady Louisa wero closest to the leader, with Merrie Gain and Orleans prominent, of the others. Multifual easily disposed of Maid-o'-Gowrie, und won by a length and a half, whilo Harbour Light, who came fast, got third placc, followed by Biugform, Merrio Gam, Sir Knox, Orleans, and King Chiara. Kooya got a bad run going out of the straight and was tailing the field most of the way, but she was running on at the finish. Tho winner scored twice at Gisbornc, but since then failed at Najiier and Hastings. Ho is ono of tho prime fancies for the Winter Cup, the field for which looks like being a weak one.

Sir Donald, Art, and Tauira were withdrawn from the AVinlor Hurdles, leaving eleven runners. Crown Pearl and Crib divided the mackiuo honours, and the race was a most interesting one throughout. At the start Pursefitler and Glucpot were most prominent, and passing .the stand the wholo field was well up and jumping cleanly. Going out of the straight Crown Pearl and Tara.ru Jack were prominent behind the two leaders, whilo Leonta was acting as whipper-in. Witli a mile to go Crown Pearl moved up to second place, but a faulty jump at the next fence lost him his place, and Marconi and Styrax then became prominent behind the Lethe Marconi and Sly rax were clear of the field at the. live furlongs, but with half a mile to "O Piirseliller joined them, and Crown Pearl was just in. the rear. The leading trio jumped the last fence together, and a great raco to tho post went to Marconi by a head, with Pursofillev a neck away. Then came Crib, who had jumped badly. Crown Peari, Leonta,

with Czaronus and Tragedy King last. Giuepot fell at the last fence. Considering the stato of the goiutf tho time was very good. The winner and runner-tip havo been most consistent of late. Otara, who had raced earlier in tlio day, and Trickery wero the withdrawals in the To Aro Handicap, for which the Fordell representative, Perrier, and Munition, a full-sistor to Avon Park, were the primo l'ancics, When, the field came into tho straight, Sh'abo and Bairnsdale were tho most prominent, but two furlongs from homo Porrier got up on tho fence. At tho distance Tolci was seoond, but a rank outsider in Sir Agnes oanio very fast' under tho stick, and catching Perrior, won by a narrow margin. Comely, who was always prominent, "was third, and Toki next, while Munition was one of the last to finish. DETAILED RESULTS.
