SIX O'CLOCK CLOSING
NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE RESOLUTIONS.
Tho executive of the New Zealand Alliance met yesterday, and . transacted a laa-ge amount . of.. business. The following resolutions"were adopted:— i "We nolo ivith great satisfaction that. the resolution adopted by the Anglican Synod was favourable to dosing liquor " ;:bars at' 6 o'clock during the war period and not 8 o'clock as set forth in tho public Press. The official resolution a» supplied to us 'reads as follows:—"J. That in tho opinion of tliis Synod it : would be in the interests of the country >to closo the bars of hotels and clubs at 6 p.m., and ■ also to forbid the practice of 'shouting' during tho period of th« ". war and for six months thereafter. 2. That a copy of this resolution be sont to the Government, urging theni to bring in legislation io this effect "or to authorise a referendum on this subject."
After considering the attitude of Par- , ' liament to the netition signed by over 100,0011 persons, the following resolution was also; adopted :—"That this executive enters its emphatic protest that after the liT. to fj Committee had-taken evidence. for over a' week on anti-shouting and the 6 o'clock closing questions, and . had recommended both petitions to the favourable consideration of the Govern- ' ment, that seven members of Parliament should use the forms of the House • to prevent a vote being taken thereon . when the report was" submitted. It urges the Government to give tho House . another opportunity of deciding thorevon, believing that the. need is greßt and , that the people are demanding these restrictions with increased force.' It declares that the Government will incur a grave responsibility ,if it fails to give the House ail opportunity of closing the bars at 6 p.m., or if as an alternative it does not provide for a referendum on similar lines .to the ono submitted to . the peoplo of New South Wales. Thero is abundant ovidence that an overwhelming majority of title oeople sincerely de.sire and insistently 'demand the curtailment of the hours of sale during the period of the war and for six months thereafter."- ■■
