Shipping Company and the New Zealand Shipping Company may eventuato in the employment of lascar labour in these waters drew yesterday from tho Minister of Marino the following answer"The Marine Department lias no power to prevent the employment of lasca.rs. In 1910 an Act, the Shipping and Soamen Amendment Act, 1310, was passed to dis--courago tho employment, of lascars and other cheap labour in ships trading between New Zealand and the Commonwealth and New Zealand ami the Cook Islands, but it has not been assented to by His Majesty the King: In October, 11112, tho Imperial authorities notified the Government that this Act was further discussed at the Imperial Conference, but that the course of the disenssion was not such as to remove the objection felt by His Majesty's Government to tho proposed legislation."
