BRITISH TRIUMPHS.
■ AFTER TEN DAYS' HARD .FIGHTING. ' • SCISSORS GRIP ON GERMAN SALIENT. LULL ON THE RUSSIAN v FRONT. GRAPHIC STORY OF THE PRIPET . , MARSHES. ■ REMARKABLE ADMISSIONS BY GERMAN WRITER 1 . ' A dispatch from Sir Douglas Haig to-day reviews the results of the last ten days' grim fighting north of tho Somme—a British triumph over tremondoufi obstaoles and difficulties, and tlie complete possession of the Germahs' first system of defences along a front 6f about eight mile«. The British on tho one side of tho great German F<jlient and the French on tho other, havo secured a scissors grip on tho situation, and tho out- - loot is distinctly unfavourable to tho enomy. Having regard to his difficulties' on. tho Russian front eleewh ere, his prospects all round are so bleak and unpromising as to havo drawn from tho Berlin correspondent of tho "New York World," von Weigand, an amazing confession. The marvel is that it got past the censor, and why it got past. Thero is ai comparative lull on the Russian front—it may be 'morely a lull in tho news rather than in the operations—and tho Germans are said to be hurrying up heavy reinforcements. Tho pressure now being exerted by tlio Italians in the Trentino and on tho Isonzo is officially stated to have caused the Austrians to'draw on tho Russian front for reinforcements. The periodical reference to Rumania's' opportunity is again vouchsafed to us.
