WAR PROFITS

AGRICULTURIST'S POINT OP VIEW. Reference to the war and war profits was made by Mr. W. Perry, of Masterton, in his presidential aildress to the Council of Agriculture yesterday. Mr. Perry said: "It is wonderful, with tho ca res, anxiety, and, in many eases, 6adness,_ in tho homes, how outwardly calm New Zealand is; lip to the present, production appears to go on as usual, judging by tho exports, but will it continue? I venture to say that it cannot. Most of tho best young men, the real workers, are away, both farm labourers and farmers' sons, and the pinch is being felt very soverely; farmers are doing the best they can under the circumstances, and not' complaining, but in many cases the farming operations will be curtailed. Many dairy-far-mers are contemplating turning their farms into sheep-walks, for want of labour. It is quite tho fashion for tho Labour leaders and the newspaper writers to make a. great point of the war profits which the farmers have been receiving; well, I am not going to say but what the grazier has been having a good time, but tho farmer who depends on the cultivation of his farm for a living, with tho heavy expenses attached thereto, and in some cases drought, lias made very little, if any, war proiit,".
