The Wellington Chess Club's annual handicap tourney for the Petherick trophy was commonced last week, t'hero being 13 entries.. Purchas, W. R. Bock, S. Mackay, and C. W. Tanner scored wins in the opening round.' The games Ward v. Cbrnwell and Dombuscli v. .White (the; present holder of the trophy) are outstanding. - Tyer. had the bye. Two ladder. matches are in view, .Still .having.challenged. W. Mack-ay for rung 2, and Tyer has challenged H. A. Ward for rung 9. The annual' handicap chess tourney of the Working-Men's Club;was commenced three weeks ago, with eighteen en-. tries._ The leader at present is A. J. Larking, with three' clear wins. The fine start' made by this Crimean veteran,. who' only ; took up chess late in life, is naturally very. popular in tlie club. The club's General Committee lias accepted the date submitted by the Watereiders for the . forthcoming ■ draughts match, viz., nest Thursday. At latest advices live players were leading in a bunch, each with "two losses, .j.nere is every prospect of a closo finislf- for the various prizes, especialfy as some of the junior players are shaping very ;well. The first of "this year's home-and-home matches with the Wellington South Club i 3 to be played at Ngaio as eonn as the local club tourney is completed..
It has been definitely decided that a 12-board telegraphic chess match be played on June 15 and 22 between Otago and Canterbury Chess Clnbs. It is now three years since the last match of this nature was played between the two clubs, it taking place on September 20 and 27, 1913, when Otago won by oight games to four. Tho forthcoming match will be the last for some time in which Mr. Severne, the acknowledged leader of the Canterbury Club, will tako part, as lie. is going to Trentham shortly, having enlisted.
